COMMMUNITY groups throughout the Mid-Ulster region will share a £100,000 lottery fund grant.
They include schools, scouts, clubs and workshops in Dungannon, Coalisland, Cooksown and Magherafelt.
Details of groups receiving the fund, and how it will be spent, is included in the following breakdown:
Conradh na Gaeilge Charn Tóchair
The organisation promotes the Irish language in the Carntogher area outside Maghera and beyond. They are using the £9,554 grant to establish a parent and toddler group with the purchase of equipment along with parent classes such as baby yoga and massage.
Cornstore Youth Club
The Cornstore Youth Club in Draperstown provides a safe place for young people and provides positive activities and events for them. They are using the £3,650 for activities in a variety of skills such as first aid, fitness training, dance, arts and crafts to help to build young people’s confidence and self-esteem.
Holy Trinity Primary School
The Cookstown primary school received a £10,000 grant for a series of drama workshops outside of class time. They are working towards a performance that showcases the diverse cultures of pupils at the school, including Polish, Portugese and Slovakian. The project is improving pupil and parent cultural awareness and mutual understanding.
Maghera Historical Society
This newly formed organisation is working with local community groups to encourage cohesion through an appreciation of their shared past. They are using the £10,000 grant for a cross community historical resource centre and forum for discussion that will increase mutual understanding.
Mid-Ulster District Scout Council
The organisation in Cookstown provides a range of activities for young children to improve their social and educational skills. They used the £7,425 to take 101 children and 37 leaders from 17 Cub Scout groups across Northern Ireland on a weekend trip to England to boost confidence and social skills.
Rural Community Network (NI)
This regional organisation based in Cookstown works with rural communities on issues such as poverty, social exclusion and community development. They received a £3,588 grant to hold six workshops to support communities to explore issues relating to living and working in rural Northern Ireland. This will culminate in a Rural Parliament event.
St Brigid’s Primary School
The Magherafelt primary school is using the £10,000 grant for a project to help the increasing numbers of children starting the school with social, emotional, speech, language and behavioural difficulties, through the development of a nurture unit.
St John’s Primary School
The organisation provides primary education for children aged four to 11 years in Coalisland. They are using the £10,000 grant to provide equipment that will enable the school to start an out of school club Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings.
St Joseph’s Grammar School
St Joseph’s Grammar School in Donaghmore is a post primary grammar school for pupils aged 11 to 18, with an all-ability Irish Medium stream. They are using the £8,720 grant for a project outside of class time to help pupils acquire the confidence and skills they need to keep them safe online.
St Joseph’s Primary School
The organisation provides primary education to children aged 4-11 in the Caledon area of Dungannon. They are using the £10,000 to install a fitness trail and non-slip durable playground markings for games and activities outside of class time.
Tamnamore LOL 513
The organisation provides activities for the community of Tamnamore in Dungannon. They received a £10,000 grant to install safety equipment and renovate the hall for use by the wider community.
The Speedwell Trust
The Trust, based in Parkanaur forest, Dungannon, works with children and young people to challenge prejudice, promote good relations and raise environmental awareness. They are using the £6256 to refurbish part of its garden, to enhance wildlife and biodiversity and make it more attractive for use by the wider community. They will also develop a pond area that is safe and accessible for people with disabilities or special needs.
Tobermore Community Projects
The organisation provides classes, training, workshops and outings for residents in the Tobermore area of Magherafelt. They are using the £4,835 grant to run a series of events to celebrate their 25th anniversary, including games for the young people, intergenerational concerts and Big Breakfast events.
