Mid Ulster District Council has secured funding of more than £200K from the Rethink Capital Waste Fund.
The money is in addition to £500K being invested by the Council to enhance Drumcoo Reycling Centre in Dungannon which is currently undergoing a major refurbishment to improve recycling facilities as well as a new traffic flow system to improve site safety and access and new waste compaction and weighbridge facilities.
Since its launch in 2010, the Rethink Waste Capital Fund has seen over £12 million in capital monies allocated by the Department of the Environment (DoE) to fund local authority reuse and recycling projects in order to divert waste from landfill and work towards meeting EU recycling targets. The fund is administered by the Waste Resources Advisory Programme (WRAP) on behalf of DoE.
Commenting on the funding award, Chair of the Council’s Environment Committee, Councillor Christine McFlynn, said:
“This funding is a very welcome boost to the Council’s investment and when complete, the new equipment and storage means we will have more capacity for accepting more recyclable waste, particularly green waste and electrical and electronic items, as well introducing reuse facilities for furniture and paint.
“This translates into an opportunity to decrease the amount of waste going needlessly to landfill and help to ensure that we can continue to meet our recycling targets”.
While the Drumcoo centre is closed, customers are asked to use the recycling centres at Coalisland (Derry Road, please note this is only suitable for cars and cars with trailers), Cookstown (Molesworth Road) and at Tullyvar (Tullyvar Road, Aughnacloy).
The Drumcoo Recycling Centre should be open again in Spring 2016.
