Children are being taken back in time to experience a Victorian Christmas this month at Ranfurly House.
As part of the award-winning education programme at the Victorian period building in Dungannon, pupils will have the opportunity to find out about, and to play with, toys from the past, while others will be shown how to create pieces of Victorian Christmas art and each will leave with a new, hand-made decoration.
To enable further understanding of a Victorian Christmas, the housekeeper of Northland House from 1895 will talk about and demonstrate the customs and traditions of that era.
Meeting children from St Patrick’s Primary School, Donaghmore, who took part in the programme, Councillor Linda Dillon, Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, said:
“This is one of the leading education programmes in the country, attracting hundreds of students every year. The whole programme represents a significant investment in the education of our children. Ranfurly House is truly a Victorian building, and to celebrate the festive season the building’s heritage is being used to explore some of the traditions of Christmas from over 100 years ago.”
The education programme at Ranfurly House received a Sandford Award and offers a range of education programmes developed in consultation with local schools and which link to the curriculum.
The Sandford Award Judges have said ‘The good experience that schools have in attending The Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House Arts & Visitor Centre is a triumph of organisation and a testament to the Education Officer and managers.”
