The Shadow Secretary of State has visited Mid Ulster.

On a tour of the district with local MP for the area, Francie Malloy, Vernon Coaker MP met with local councillors and council officials to hear about the issues and priorities, including a strategy for economic growth, of the new Mid Ulster District Council.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Linda Dillon, Chair of the Council, said:

“I welcomed the opportunity to meet the Shadow Secretary of State and to share our vision for the development of Mid Ulster, as well as to highlight some of the more challenging issues which we face, from infrastructure and telecommunications to the particular needs of rural communities. Establishing relationships and raising awareness at this level will stand us in good stead in the future”.

Council Vice Chair, Councillor Kim Ashton, was also at the meeting:

“The Shadow Secretary is no stranger to this part of the world and clearly takes his role seriously. His interest in what is happening here on the ground, particularly in areas beyond Belfast and the east of Northern Ireland was very obvious and we had very productive and constructive discussions”.

The Shadow Secretary of State, Vernon Coaker MP, was appointed to his position by the new Labour leader in September this year and previously held the same post from 2011 to 2013.
