A NEW state-of-the-art science school worth in the region of £10m is being planned for South West College’s Dungannon campus.

Proposals for the new engineering centre of excellence have been drawn up in consultation with experts around the world, and reflect Tyrone’s growing success and reputation in this lucrative field.

It’s hoped the project will inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists.

South West College revealed the project, the largest the college has undertaken to date, at a special meeting of Mid-Ulster District Council. It confirmed that a site had already been located at the Dungannon site for the new building.

The specialist centre is planned to house the latest innovative technologies and equipment, and will become the heart of the college’s plans to become a leading light in the engineering sector.

The college said the centre would design the products needed for the future using the best practices adopted by the most up-to-date US technology centres. The announcement was made as part of the council’s Local Development Plan, which highlights the plight of rural communities.

The news was welcomed by Fermanagh and South Tyrone Ulster Unionist MLA, Alastair Patterson.

“This planned development would contain leading technologies and would play host to new innovative technology ideas,” he said.

“This new centre, when opened, will hopefully encourage more young people, particularly women, to become involved with engineering.

“I look forward to seeing how this centre will benefit the young people in our area and encourage growth in the engineering sector.”
