More than 50 people attended the session which was orgainsed by the Mid Ulster Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) to help raise awareness of the growing number of ways in which local people, particularly those who are vulnerable, can be duped by scammers and cold callers.
Among the speakers was Beverley Burns from Trading Standards who highlighted the rise of fake lotteries, prize draws, fraudulent property scams, romance and dating scams, as well as the increase in the methods used, including post, email text and phone calls, ranging in value from a few pounds to thousands.
PSNI Crime Prevention Officers, Joanne Smyth and Sheila Henderson, also gave advice on what to do if a ‘cold caller’ arrives and encouraged attendees to continue to be vigilant and watch out for their friends and neighbours.
“All of these people are volunteers who act as a link between local communities and the police and I was delighted to see such a good turn-out and to see the messages received so positively,” said Councillor Phelim Gildernew, Chair of the PCSP. “They will help to spread the word, as well as giving practical advice, all of which keeps our communities safer.”
