Mid Ulster District Council hosts first Civic Awards evening of 2017

Mid Ulster District Council recognised the achievements of over 20 local teams, clubs and individuals at the first Civic Awards ceremony of 2017.The event took place at the Burnavon, Cookstown this week and awards were distributed in the categories of Education, Sport, Business and Community and Arts and Music.

The largest category of the evening was Sport. One Club, five teams and three individuals received awards: Ballymaguigan GAC, Ardboe GAC Ladies Team, Henry Joy McCracken’s Moneymore GAC Ladies Team, Watty Graham’s Glen GAC Ladies Team, Bancran Tug of War Team, Draperstown, Cookstown Bowling Club, Glen Smith and Mark Wilson from Cookstown Bowling Club and Raymond Orr from Fivemiletown.

Recipients in the Business and Community category were: Castlecaulfield Horticultural Society, Donaghmore Horticultural Society, Arthritis Research Charity Shop, Auchnacloy, and J. Hutton & Sons Butchers, Cookstown.

Award-winners in the Arts and Music category were: Royal British Legion Standard Bearers Norman Espie, Susan Park, Ellie Park and Rachael McKeown, Matthew Wenlock, Cullybackey Pipe Band, Kerri Mullan, harpist from Maghera and Peter McKenna, Clogher Valley Comhaltas.

Ampertaine P.S., Upperlands was the only recipient in the Education category. The School was recently named Top Northern Ireland School in the Annual Accelerated Reader Competition.

Speaking at the event, the Chair of the Council, Councillor Trevor Wilson said, “I would like to congratulate everyone being recognised here this evening for their fantastic achievements and sincerely thank them for their impressive contribution to our community.

“This is the first Civic Awards evening of 2017 and I’m sure there will be many more such is the abundance of talent we have here in Mid Ulster. Each of the award recipients have helped shine a positive and glowing spotlight on our district and I’m delighted to be playing a part in it tonight.”
